DeJa Vu at Turning
Stone Classic XV as Archer Defeats Morris |
Winner Johnny Archer, Mike Zuglan, and
runner-up Rodney Morris |
Johnny Archer has taken his sixth Turning Stone
title and pocketed the $8,000 first prize by defeating Rodney
Morris 13-8 in the final match. Oddly, Morris also finished
second to Archer in the last Turning Stone event in December
of 2009 and Dennis Hatch also took third in both events. Mika
Immonen claimed the fourth slot. With his win, Archer also solidly
cemented his number one spot in the BCA rankings. Archer, who
is not happy with his own game at the moment, told us after
the win: "I gotta be honest with you, I don't know how
I won this thing." Well, to us it appeared that he won
it with fantastic shotmaking and unbelievable cue ball position
and speed control. He never tasted a single loss the entire
week and he defeated most of his opponents by handsome margins.
If this was Archer on an off week, the rest of the pro pool
world is in real trouble when he gets his game back.
Notable moments of the week included the match between Shane
Van Boening and Mika Immonen where Van Boening took control
of the match early and romped off to a 5-1 lead over world number-one
ranked Immonen. Van Boening had total control of the table and
appeared to be headed to a big win when Immonen began his comeback
and completely turned the tables on Van Boening to win the match
9-5, never letting Van Boening have another rack win or even
any air with which to regain the momentum. Another feat of note
was the entire performance of Liz Ford who defeated man after
man to finish in a tie for thirteenth. Ford now carries a valid
argument with anyone who says that the women cannot hang with
the men on the pro level.
On the final day, Rodney Morris and Dennis Hatch put on two
crowd-pleasing matches with Morris coming out on top in both
matches. The second match took less than 45 minutes as the two
big hearts slugged it out in front of the Accu-Stats cameras.
A highlight for all of the fans who could not be at the event
in person was that Pat Fleming brought the Accu-Stats camera
equipment to Turning Stone and put on a flawless free stream
that was enjoyed by the largest audience that we at AZBilliards
have ever enjoyed. Over 9,000 unique visitors per day were able
to watch a stream that never chopped up or froze except when
the casino lost all power for an hour on Friday. Our heartfelt
thanks go out to the entire Accu-Stats crew for their efforts,
to "Upstate" Al Leon for his tireless commentating
and to Fran Crimi for bringing her analytical expertise into
the commentary booth. We are also very grateful that Simonis
Cloth, the TAP league system and Lucasi Hybrid cues provided
the financial backing required to produce such a stream.
This was the fifteenth edition of the Turning Stone Classic
produced by Mike Zuglan. It is held in the grand auditorium
of the beautiful Turning Stone Resort and Casino and is unique
in that spectator admission is free. This is a fabulous venue
filled with a plethora of fine restaurants and entertainment
options. For anyone in the northeastern United States the Turning
Stone event is an excellent choice as a consideration for your
pool-related vacation.

Dennis Hatch |
Hatch wins Amsterdam Joss Tour Stop |
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour ended
their 2009/2010 regular season at Main Street Billiards in Amsterdam
New York where it more of the same story we have reported all
year on the tour; another undefeated win for Dennis Hatch.
This time, Hatch took the hot-seat with a 9-7 win over Lyn Wechsler,
and after a lopsided 9-2 win over Canadian Spencer Auigbelle,
Hatch finished the event off with a 9-6 win over Wechsler in
the finals.
Hatch took home $1000 for first place, while Wechsler settled
for $700 in second place prize money.
As is now the case at each tour stop, tour director Mike Zuglan
held a $500 added second chance event on Sunday. That event
was won by Kevin Ketz, who defeated Jeff Smolen in the finals.
Ketz earned $340 for the win, with Smolen taking $220 for second.
While the regular season is now complete, the true season finale
will be in two weeks at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona,
NY for the $25,000 added Turning Stone Classic XV. We will be
joining forces with Accu-Stats to provide streaming coverage
of this great event, as well as real time scoring for the entire
event.

Joss Northeast
9-Ball Tour 2010-2011 Schedule Released |
|
|
Dechaine takes
Providence Joss stop |
Mike Dechaine |
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour returned from a 2 week
break with a field of fifty two players at Snookers Billiards
in Providence, RI over the weekend of June 12 - 13. With $1500
added to the main event, the players were competing for a total
purse of $4800.
Mike Dechaine set himself as the man to beat in this one, as
he rode the winners bracket to the hot-seat, which he captured
in a 9-8 victory over Nelson Oliviera. The match was close the
entire way, but it was Dechaine who edged out Oliviera in the
end.
On the one loss side, Oliviera eliminated Dave Fernandez 9-6
to set up a rematch with Dechaine in the finals, but the final
match would be decided early as Dechaine cruised to a one-sided
9-4 win and first place.
Dechaine took home $1300 for first, while Oliviera settled for
$850.
Sunday saw nineteen of the amateur players from Saturday come
back for the $500 added second chance event. This event was
won by Herb Lehman, who defeated Phil Davis 3-1 in the finals.
The win was worth $320 for Lehman.
The Joss Tour will be at Main Street Billiards in Amsterdam,
Ny on August 7-8 for their last event before the Turning Stone
Classic XV on August 19 - 22.

Zvi goes undefeated
on Joss NE stop |
Zion Zvi worked
his way through a field of 31 entrants, on hand for the 17th
stop on the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour on the weekend of May
22-23, and emerged undefeated to chalk up his first win on
the tour. The $1,500-added event was hosted by Raxx Pool Room
& Grill, in West Hempstead, NY.
From among the winners’ side final four, Zvi advanced
past Kevin Guimond, with a 9-7 victory and faced Mhet Vergara
in the hot seat match. Vergara had just sent “Ginky”
Sansouci west 9-4. Zvi chalked up a commanding 9-2 win over
Vergara to take possession of the hot seat, and waited for
what turned out to be Guimond’s return.
Guimond’s three-match trip back to the finals began
with a 9-6 win over Scott Tollefson, who’d defeated
Stewart Warnock 9-6 and Chance Chin 9-3 to reach him. “Ginky”
drew Brian Deska, who’d survived a hill-hill match versus
Mike Wong and scored a more lopsided victory over George Rodriguez
9-2. Deska dropped “Ginky” into the tie for fifth
place with a 9-4 win, as Guimond was busy defeating Tollefson
9-6.
The quarterfinal match was a double hill struggle, that ended
with Deska in fourth place and Guimond facing Vergara in the
semifinals. Guimond then got into two straight 9-5 matches.
The first was a win over Vergara, that put him into the finals,
while the second was a victory for Zvi, which secured his
first Joss Northeast 9-Ball win.
A $500-added Second Chance Tournament, held for non-pro players
who had been eliminated from the Open event on Saturday, drew
eight entrant, competing for a $660 prize package. Mike Panzarella
took home the first place prize with a 3-2 victory over Holden
Chin in the finals. Scott Murphy finished third and Victor
Nau finished fourth.

Hatch picks up seventh win on Joss Northeast
9-Ball Tour |
Dennis Hatch chalked up his seventh
win in 10 attempts on the 16th stop of the 2009-2010 Joss Northeast
9-Ball Tour on the weekend of April 17-18. Only Shane Winters,
Stevie Moore and Rodney Morris have kept Hatch out of the winning
circle when he’s competed during this Joss Northeast season.
Winters and Moore did so with victories in the finals of the
event. Morris did it by dropping him into third place at the
14th annual Turning Stone Classic in December, thus preventing
a Hatch/Archer final in that event, which Archer went on to
win.
In a new format, featuring a mixture of professional and non-professional
competitors paying different fees to enter, the $1,500-added
event, hosted by Golden Cue Billiards Lounge in Albany, NY,
drew 43 total entrants; 35 ‘pros’ and 8 ‘non-pros.’
The tour stop also featured a $500-added ‘second chance’
tournament on Sunday, for players eliminated from the main event.
A total of 25 players opted to compete for $1,000 in total purse
money in the second chance event, which was won Hal Hughes.
Hatch gave up only one of out of every four racks he played
in the final three matches; a 27-9 aggregate score that began
with 9-2 win over Paul Rozonewski among the winners’ side
final four. Matt Tetreault, in the meantime, was sending Chris
Orme west by the same score. Hatch sent Tetreault to the semifinals
with a 9-3 win that left him in the hot seat.
After eliminating Keith Lauer 9-1 and Bucky Souvanthong 9-4,
it was Joss Northeast tournament director Mike Zuglan, laying
in wait for Orme on the one-loss side. Rozonewski found himself
facing Dave Fernandez, who’d defeated Hal Hughes (eventual
winner of the second chance event) 9-4 and Brent Boemmels (co-tour
director of the East Coast Pool Tour) 9-3 to reach him. Zuglan
and Orme battled to double hill before Orme prevailed to move
into the quarterfinals. Fernandez joined him with a 9-6 win
over Rozonewski.
Fernandez made short work of Orme in those quarterfinals, defeating
him 9-1, before moving into a ‘nail biting,’ double
hill match versus Tetreault in the semifinals. Tetrault hung
on to win for a second chance at Hatch in the true double elimination
finals. Tetrault won almost as many games in what would prove
to be the only set necessary as Hatch’s previous two opponents
combined, but it wasn’t enough. Hatch took an early four
game lead and though Tetreault chipped away at it, Hatch eventually
extended it by one and finished things at 9-4.
In the second chance tournament ruled by races to three, Hal
Hughes, who finished in the 9-12 slot of the main event, was
in the hot seat when he faced John Rich in a true double elimination
final. Rich shut Hughes out in the opening set , but Hughes
battled to double hill in the second set, and prevailed to win.

Krull tops Robles
on Joss Northeast stop |
Rob Krull,
a relative unknown on the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour, gave
up the hot seat to Tony Robles, but came back to beat him
twice in a double elimination final to claim his first win
on the Joss tour. The $1,500-added event, held on the weekend
of April 10-11, drew 47 entrants to Raxx Pool Room and Grill
in West Hempstead, NY.
From among the winners’ side final four, Krull got into
the hot seat match versus Robles with a 9-2 win over Brent
Boemmels, co-director of the East Coast Pool Tour. Robles
had sent Jorge Rodriguez west 9-4. In the first of what would
turn out to be three matches together, Robles gained the hot
seat with a 9-4 win over Krull.
Shaun Wilkie, who most recently finished tied for 13th at
the Players’ Championship in Valley Forge, was in the
midst of a one-loss side campaign that would get him into
the quarterfinals and waiting for Rodriguez. Wilkie had defeated
Pete Bowman 9-5 and Joey Korsiak 9-7 to get there. Boemmel’s
first opponent in the west bracket was Eddie Abraham, who’d
defeated Ed Vazquez 9-6 and Mhet Vergara 9-3. Wilkie and Boemmels
advanced to the quarterfinals with identical 9-3 wins over
Rodriguez and Abraham, respectively.
With a 9-3 win over Boemmels, Wilkie faced Krull in the semifinals.
Krull got his second chance against Robles with a 9-5 win
over Boemmels. In the opening set of the true double elimination
final, Krull defeated Robles 9-6. Robles got one game closer
in the second set, but Krull won it 9-7 to take home the first
place prize.
In a concurrent, $500-added Second Chance Tournament, a new
feature on the Joss tour, Mike Badsteubner defeated Oscar
Bonilla 3-1 in the finals. Dave Ascolese finished in third
place, with Megan Smith in fourth. A random drawing won Pat
DiBuono a free entry and three paid room nights to the Turning
Point tournament (a $550 value). The tour stops at Golden
Cue Billiards in Albany, NY on the weekend of April 17-18.

Hello Everyone,
I am pleased to announce an exciting new format for my Joss
Northeast 9-Ball Tour. The new format will commence immediately
at our next regular season $2,000 Added event at Raxx Pool Room
& Grill (W. Hempstead NY). The new format will be as follows.
- Each $2,000 Added event will consist of a $1,500 Added (Sat
& Sun) main event, and a $500 Added Sunday event.
- There will now be a 2 tier entry fee system for the $1,500
Added main event. Pro level players Will Pay $120 ($100 + $20
greens fee), and all others will pay $70 ($50 + $20 greens fee).
- The $500 Added Sunday event will be for the eliminated non
pro level players only, with a $20 entry fee (no greens fee).
This event will be a short, double elimination, race to 3 or
4 depending on field size and available tables. This event will
be run simultaneously with the conclusion of the main event.
- The determination of pro level or non pro level players will
be made solely by the tournament director whose decision will
be final.
I have been working on this idea for some time now. Polling
players, doing the math, talking to room owners, and I believe
this idea will allow players more competition time and give
more players a chance to cash! Everyone that I have spoken to
is as excited as I am about the change. So much so that I decided
to begin immediately instead of waiting for next season. There
are 5 regular season events before our $25,000 Added Turning
Stone Classic XV 9-Ball Open Season Finale. Our complete, updated,
schedule can be found on this site or for more info regarding
sponsorship, hosting an event at your room, or competing in
an event, please contact me at 518-356-7163

Dennis Hatch |
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour visited Salt City Billiards
in Syracuse, NY over the weekend of March 27th - 28th where

for another tour win.
Hatch captured the hot-seat with a 9-6 win over Robb Saez.
Saez went to the left side of the board and ran into Chris Orme.
Orme had lost to Dave Grau in the third round, but had bounced
back with four wins on the one loss side so far. Saez would
end Orme's run with a 9-7 score.
The final match went to Hatch 9-5 in the first set for the latest
in a long stream of Joss Tour wins.
Hatch earned $1100 for the win, while Saez took home $800 for
second place.

Hatch wins Trick Shot Billiards Joss Tour
Stop |
Dennis Hatch added yet another
Joss NE 9-Ball Tour Stop to his resume over the weekend of March
13th and 14th at Trick Shot Billiards in Clifton Park, NY.
Hatch ran undefeated to the hot-seat, which he captured with
a 9-6 win over Bucky Souvanthong.
On the left side of the board, Souvanthong faced Dave Grau,
who had been on a team since losing his first match of the event.
Grau had won six matches on the left side of the board, but
could not get past Souvanthong. Bucky won 9-6 to earn another
shot Hatch in the finals.
The finals only lasted one match with Hatch scoring a 9-6 win
in the first set to earn yet another first place finish on the
Joss Tour.
Hatch earned $1170 for first place, with Souvanthong pocketing
$900 for second.
The next stop on the tour is Match 27 - 28 at Salt City Billiards
in Syracuse, NY. This tour stop was originally scheduled at
a different room and was recently changed. Remember that the
most current schedule can always be found at www.joss9balltour.com.
We do not know at this time whether the tournament participants

Moore over Hatch
at Joss Tour Stop |
Stevie Moore |
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour was in action over the
weekend of March 6-7 at Cap's Cue Club in Syracuse, NY with
a field of players searching for their share of the $3500 in
prize money available.
It looked like players would see a showdown between Dennis Hatch
and Stevie Moore for the hot-seat as both players worked their
way through opposite sides of the tournament chart on Saturday.
That showdown would be derailed by Dave Grau, who defeated Hatch
9-8 in the final four on the winners side.
Grau would not be as succesful in the match for the hot-seat
against Moore. Moore had started off his tournament with a close
9-7 win over Paul Rozonewski and had been crushing opponents
ever since then. Grau would get to five games against Moore,
but that was all Moore would allow.
Grau went to the one loss side and found Dennis Hatch waiting,
with revenge on his mind. The match was close, but Hatch wound
up with the 9-7 win and the Hatch/Moore Showdown was back on
the schedule.
As anticipated as the Hatch/Moore showdown was, it turned out
to be fairly anti-climactic as Moore kept on his roll and ran
over Hatch 9-4 for first place.
Moore earned $1000, while Hatch settled for $800. Grau and Bucky
Souvanthong filled out the top four places.
This event also featured a random drawing of free entry to the
upcoming Turning Stone Classic XV and three free nights at Turning
Stone. Players who did not cash were eligible for the drawing.
Jose Mendez was the winner of the drawing.
Please remember that the Joss Tour's schedule has seen some
changes in recent weeks. The most current schedule can be found
at here.

Hatch returns to the winner’s circle
on Joss Northeast Tour |
He’d won nine out of 16
events on the Joss Northeast Tour in 2008-2009, and though he’d
won only three of the nine stops on the 2009-20010 tour, to
date, they’d included the Ocean State (RI) 9-Ball Championship
and a turn as MVP of American’s Mosconi Cup victory (defeating
Neils Feijen twice by a combined score of 12-4). There was a
prevailing notion on the Joss tour, that with Dennis Hatch among
the entrants, pretty much everyone else was playing for second
place. That changed slightly in Latham, NY in early January,
when Hatch suffered two quick defeats on the tour stop there
that had him on his way home by the end of the first day. The
change didn’t last for long, though.
Chris Orme, no stranger to Hatch, who’d taken advantage
of Hatch’s early exit, to go on and win that January tournament,
was back on the weekend of February 20-21 in Amsterdam, NY,
looking for two in a row. A field of 42 entrants joined him
for the $2,000-added event hosted by Main St. Billiards in Amsterdam,
and Hatch was among them. He spoiled Orme’s bid, defeating
him twice and chalking up his first Joss NE Tour win of the
new year; his third of the 2009-2010 Joss Northeast season.
Both advanced to play each other among the winners’ side
final four on Sunday, and engaged in a tight hill-hill battle,
with Hatch moving on to face Dan Heidrich. Heidrich had just
survived a hill-battle of his own against Kevin Guimond. Hatch
gained the hot seat with a 9-6 win over Heidrich.
Orme moved to the one-loss side, where he faced Dave Grau. Grau
had moved past Mike Dechaine, hill-hill, and Dave Fernandez
9-4 to get to him. Guimond was met by tour director Mike Zuglan,
who’d defeated Tom Acciavatti 9-2 and Paul Dryden 9-5.
Zuglan beat Guimond 9-3, as Orme was busy sending Grau home
9-6. Orme tallied his second 9-6 win to drop Zuglan into fourth
place and used a third 9-6 win to defeat Heidrich in the semifinals.
In the opening set of the true double elimination final, Hatch
came within two games of finishing it at 7-3, but a determined
Orme fought back to win six in a row and force a second set.
They battled to a 4-4 tie in the early going of the second set,
before Hatch moved ahead to stay. He reached the hill first,
ahead by just a game, and closed it out 9-7.
The eleventh stop on the Joss Northeast Tour, scheduled for
February 27-28 in Woburn, MA has been cancelled. The next scheduled
stop will be the $1,500-added Mary Cappotto Memorial, scheduled
for March 6-7, at Cap’s Cue Club in Syracuse.

Chris Orem goes
undefeated for Joss Tour Win |

For the last year or so, Dennis Hatch walking
into a pool room preparing for a Joss NE 9-Ball Tour stop meant
that the rest of the field was playing for second place. Dennis
might want to remind the guys at Diamond Eight Billiards in
Latham, NY of that information.
Hatch was one of the thirty nine players competing for the $5120
in prize money, but an unusual thing happened right out of the
gate. Hatch fell in his first match to Dave Fernandez, and that
wasn't Hatch's only loss. Kevin Guimond added insult to injury
by eliminating Hatch before the first day of the event was complete.
Meanwhile, the rest of the field was concentrating on winning
a tournament. Chris Orem took the hot-seat with a convincing
9-1 win over Redgie Cutler.
Cutler made the trip to the one loss side and ran into Danny
Hewitt. Hewitt had lost a Saturday match to Orem and was gunning
for another shot at Orem. Hewitt would get that shot after a
9-6 win over Hewitt, sending Cutler home in third place.
The final match saw Orem jump out to an early 5-1 lead and hold
off a mid-match charge from Hewitt for the 9-5 win.
The win was worth $1400 for Orem, while Hewitt settled for $1000
in second place prize money.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be at Main Street Billiards in
Amsterdam, NY on February 20-21 for their next event. This event
will be a $2000 added tour stop at this new addition to the
tour.

Winner Johnny Archer, Mike Zuglan, and
runner-up Rodney Morris |
Archer Grabs Turning Stone |
Johnny Archer has won the Turning
Stone Classic XIV and in so doing has accomplished the unheard
of feat of winning the last three consecutive points ranking
events in the USA. This will cement Archer’s position
as the number one player in the USA.
Archer had a phenomenal week that was topped by a narrow escape
from a charging Rodney Morris in the final race to 13. In the
final Archer established a nice 7-2 lead after first trailing
2-0. But when he moved that margin to 12-7 Morris began to come
back on him and brought the score line as close as 12-11 before
scratching on his final break, giving Archer ball in hand. Archer
took the gift and ran out the rack for the win.
Among those who felt the sting of the Scorpion’s cue this
week were Shane Van Boening, whom Archer sent to the one-loss
side 9-5 and Thorsten Hohmann who got similar treatment 9-6.
Mosconi Cup teammate Dennis Hatch then threw up a roadblock
in the path to victory by defeating Archer 9-6. Archer then
ended the tournament for good friend Stevie Moore 9-4 and Marcus
Chamat, also 9-4. Archer then bested Charlie Williams 9-5 only
to have to face another good friend (and his business partner)
Kim Davenport. Here he avenged the loss he suffered to Davenport
at the US Open this year by defeating Davenport 9-5. He then
had to get by an exhausted Dennis Hatch to earn his berth in
the finals. Hatch told us before the match that he was just
“out of gas” and that he was so tired that he was
shaking on his shots, something he just does not do. Archer
murdered him 9-1.
As mentioned, in the finals Archer faced the heretofore-undefeated
Rodney Morris. Morris had just beaten Mosconi Cup MVP Dennis
Hatch to earn his hot seat and looked as sharp as ever, but
Archer was simply too much to handle and won that match and
the event.

The Hatchetman
warms up for the Mosconi Cup with seventh win on Joss Northeast
Tour |
Dennis Hatch |
Ten days after it was announced that he would
be joining Team USA in the Mosconi Cup tournament scheduled
for December 10-13 in Las Vegas, Dennis Hatch warmed up for
the competition by winning the 21st Ocean State 9-Ball Championship
on the weekend of November 21-22. While his appearance as a
member of Team USA will be the first of his career, his victory
at the $5,000-added, Ocean State Championship, which drew 108
entrants to Snooker’s Café and Billiards in Providence,
RI, was his seventh victory this year on the Joss Northeast
9-Ball Tour and his second straight Ocean State Championship
victory. Hatch defeated George ‘Ginky’ Sansouci
in the finals to take last year’s title.
Hatch had to come from the one-loss side to put this one away.
After victories over Charlie Matarrazo, Tony Frisina, Jorge
Rodriguez, Chris Leal and Danny Heidrich, Hatch was among the
winners’ side final four, where he faced Dave Grau, another
frequent competitor on the tour, who was seeking his first Joss
Northeast victory. The two had last locked horns in a Joss Northeast
final in March when Grau, who’d come from the one-loss
side, handed Hatch his first set defeat in five tour stops in
the opening set of the finals. Hatch came back to win the second
set and chalk up his sixth straight tour victory, stretching
back to October of ‘08. They’d met a week earlier
in Albany, among the winners’ side final four, but it
was Grau moving to the one-loss side and eventually finishing
fourth.
In this year’s Ocean State battle, Grau sent Hatch west
with a 9-6 victory, as Nelson Oliveira was busy doing likewise
to Shane Winters 9-4. Grau sent Winters over with a commanding
9-1 victory to gain the hot seat and wait for Hatch to come
back.
Hatch’s first challenge on the one-loss side was Tom McGonagle,
who’d eliminated Bucky Souvanthong 9-4 and Kevin Guimond
in a hill-hill struggle. Winters picked up Ray McNamara, who,
after being sent west by Grau 9-6 from among the winners’
side final eight, defeated Justin Muller and Danny Heidrich
9-3. Winters and Hatch advanced to the quarterfinals; Winters
dropping McNamara 9-6, Hatch disposing of McGonagle 9-7. Over
the course of the next 30 games in three matches, Hatch gave
up only three racks. He gave up two of them versus Winters in
the quarterfinals, and none whatsoever in the semifinals against
Oliveira.
In the opening set of the true double elimination finals, Hatch
gave up a single rack to Grau and forced a second set. Grau
battled in the second set, but Hatch finished it ahead by four.

Wilkie gets some at Joss Tour Stop |
Mike Zuglan brought his Joss
NE 9-Ball Tour to Raxx Billiards in W. Hempstead, NY on the
weekend of November 14th and 15th and thirty five players threw
their hats in the ring to win their share of the $4800 in prize
money.
With no Dennis Hatch in sight, the field was wide open for any
number of players to grab this title for their resume. One such
hopeful, Joey Korsiak, found himself with a tough path to follow
as a first round 9-5 loss to Oscar Bonilla sent him to the one
loss side.
Meanwhile, back on the right side of the board, Shaun "Get
Some" Wilkie and Bucky Souvanthong were charting a course
through the brackets, both looking for their first tour wins.
Wilkie and Souvanthong faced off for the hot-seat, which was
won by Wilkie with a 9-6 scoreline.
Souvanthong went to the left side of the board, where Korsiak
had sent home seven straight opponents after that first round
loss. Souvanthong became victim number eight as Korsiak beat
him 9-7 setting up a Korsiak/Wilkie final match.
Korsiak showed that he was ready for business as he put a five
pack on Wilkie right out of the gate. Wilkie was unphased and
ground his way back into the match. Before Korsiak knew what
happened, his lead had evaporated and the score was tied at
7-7. Wilkie got to the hill at 8-7, but Korsiak quickly joined
him at 8-8. The case game went back and forth until a long rail
kick from Korsiak just missed the side pocket and Wilkie ended
the match and tournament with a 9-8 win.
Wilkie earned $1400 in first place prize money, while Korsiak
settled for $950. Raxx Billiards room owner Holden Chin donated
a prize package that included a free entry to the upcoming Turning
Stone Classic XIV as well as three room nights at the Turning
Stone Casino. Any player who had never won a Joss event and
did not cash at this event was elegible for this prize package,
and that lucky winner was Redgie Cutler.
Next weekend, Zuglan will bring the tour to the recently relocated
Snooker’s Pool Lounge in Providence, RI for the 21st Ocean
State 9-Ball Championship. If you have not visited the new location,
please call the room or check the tour website for directions.

Hungry Hatch
wins at Hippos |
Ron Casanzio, Victor Conte (Room Owner)
and Dennis Hatch |
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour was back in action on
the weekend of November 7-8 at Hippo's House of Billiards in
Yorkville, NY. Notable names in the field of 42 players included
Tamiko Kumatori, Chris Orme, Victor Conte, Shane Winters, Mike
Zuglan, Ron Casanzio, Chance Chin, Dave Grau and multi time
winner Dennis Hatch.
While Hatch is a favorite to take down any Joss Tour Stop, Shane
Winters had already added two tour stop wins to his resume this
season while Hatch only had one win so far in the young season.
Hatch would dominate this event on his way to tour win #2.
Hatch cruised through the winners side with little problem until
the 4th round when he defeated Angelo Hilton 9-7. That match
was followed by a hill-hill win over Chance Chin to set Hatch
up against Ron Casanzio for the hot-seat. Two close matches
might have gotten Hatch's attention as he crushed Casanzio 9-1
for the hot-seat.
Casanzio won a 9-8 thriller over Chris Orme on the one loss
side to earn another shot at Hatch in the finals, but Hatch
doesn't make a habit of losing in the finals of Joss Tour events
and this weekend was no exception. Hatch won the first set of
the double elim finals 9-6 for yet another Joss Tour Win.
Hatch earned $1260 for first, while Casanzio took home $900
for second.

Winters defeats Hatch twice for second Joss
Northeast win |
The winners of the first two
stops on the 2009-2010 Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour met and battled
in the finals of the third stop on the weekend of October 10-11,
with Shane Winters emerging undefeated. Hosted by the alliterative
Bison Billiards in Buffalo, NY, the $2,000-added event drew
36 entrants.
Winters, who’d won the opening tour stop on the last weekend
in September, first met Hatch, who’d won the second stop
on the weekend of October 3-4, among the winners’ side
final four. Winters sent Hatch west 9-7, moving into the hot
seat match versus Hendrik Drost, who’d sent Derek Williams
to the one-loss side by the same score. Winters gained the hot
seat with a decisive 9-2 victory and waited for what turned
out to be Hatch’s return.
Meanwhile, on the one-loss side, Dennis Hatch’s uncle,
Mark Hatch, was making moves of his own. He got by J.B. Brotherton
9-4 and Dan See 9-5 to meet Williams, as Bucky Souvanthong defeated
Jim Hoffstetter 9-4 and shutout Dan Kolacz to meet Dennis. Uncle
Mark defeated Williams 9-6 as his nephew was at work surviving
a hill-hill match against Souvanthong. Uncle and nephew met
in the quarterfinals, where nephew Dennis dropped Uncle Mark
into fourth place 9-1 and turned to face Drost.
A 9-5 win over Drost put Hatch back into the finals for the
second straight week, where he got a second chance at Winters.
The two battled back and forth, one game at a time, to a 5-5
tie, before Winters pulled ahead, winning four of the next five
games and capturing the first place prize.
It was only the third time in five years that Hatch had been
beaten in the finals of a major event. He chalked up five wins
on the 2008-2009 Joss Northeast Tour and was the runner-up to
Ralf Souquet in the Turning Stone Classic XII in February of
this year. Prior to that, dating back to October of 2004, Hatch
had won the Joss Northeast Tour 15 times, and had placed second
only twice; once in 2007 and once in October 2004.

Hatch Returns
for Undefeated Joss Tour Win |
Dennis Hatch |
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour held their second event
of the new season at Trick Shot Billiards in Clifton Park, NY.
After last week's break from the Dennis Hatch winning stream,
things were back to the status quo this weekend with Hatch engineering
another undefeated run through the field.
This week's victims were Kevin Sun, Paul Rozonewski, Danny Hewitt,
Dave Grau and Chris Orme on the way to the hot-seat for Hatch.
Orme was able to get seven games before Hatch won the match.
Orme then scored a 9-3 win over Grau to earn another shot at
Hatch in the finals, but that would be as far as he would get
as Hatch ended the first match of the finals quickly with a
9-3 win.
Hatch earned $1400 for the win, while Orme settled for $980
in second place prize money.
The Tour will be at Bison Billiards in Williamsville, NY on
October 17-18 for their next tour stop.

Winters freezes out Petrov for Joss Tour
Win |
Shane Winters avenged a late
Saturday loss and double dipped Ivaylo Petrov in the finals
to win his first ever Joss NE 9-Ball Tour stop at TJ's Classic
Billiards in Waterville, ME.
Winters remained undefeated almost all day Saturday, but lost
a tough 9-7 decision to Petrov in their last match of the day.
Winters would take that loss in stride and come back Sunday
morning with a vengeance.
Winters started Sunday with a lopsided 9-2 win to eliminate
John Clark and followed that up with a 9-5 win that eliminated
Ray MacNamara. A 9-7 win over Nelson Oliviera and then a 9-1
win over Dave Grau earned Winters his spot in the finals and
a shot at revenge of Petrov.
The first set of the true double elimination finals was a close
one with Winters emerging the 9-7 winner. The second set was
a different story altogether as Winters cruised to a 9-1 win
and his first tournament win on tour.
Winters earned $1500 for first place, while Petrov settled for
$1020 in second place prize money.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be at Trick Shot Billiards &
Sports Pub in Clifton Park, NY for their next event next week.
