Earl Strickland |
Strickland Takes Turning Stone XXI |
Earl Strickland has emerged victorious
at Turning Stone XXI by defeating Jeremy Sossei 13-7 in the
finals. Strickland only tasted defeat once at the hands of Brandon
Shuff (9-4), a loss he avenged on the final day by relegating
Shuff to fourth place with a 9-3 score line.
No one else could hang with the Pearl. He defeated Ron Cosanzio
(9-2) and Jason Klatt (9-8) before Shuff sent him left and once
over there he rolled over Mike Dechaine (9-6) in a match where
both players challenged one another to a series of mind games
over the rack and cue ball break position, Karen Corr (9-6),
Joey Dupuis (9-5) and Dany Normandin (9-3) before entering the
finals against Sossei who had been undefeated coming into the
last match.
Sossei had quite the week. He had a tough row to hoe but he
took down Robb Saez (9-8), Chris Bartram (9-7), Thorsten Hohmann
(9-8), Joey Dupuis (9-6) and Dany Normandin (9-5) before finding
his only loss of the event to Strickland in the finals.
AzBilliards wishes to thank Mike Zuglan of the Joss Northeast
Tour, Turning Stone Casino and resort, Pat and Pete Fleming
of Accu-Stats, Al Leon, Eddie Culhane, Lucasi Hybrid Cues, the
TAP League System, and Master Chalk for making our live stream
and scoring as well as the brackets possible.

D'Alfonso
wins Fast Eddie' Joss Tour Stop |
Tom D'Alfonso |
Tom D'Alfonso avenged his only loss and defeated
Ron Cosanzio twice in the finals to win the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour
stop at Fast Eddie's Billiards Cafe in New Milford, Ct.
D'Alfonso and Cosanzio were the last players left standing on
the winners side of the board in the 49 player field, but it
was Cosanzio who scored a 9-6 win to take the hot-seat and send
D'Alfonso to the left side.
D'Alfonso's stay on the one loss side would be a short one as
he quickly eliminated Nelson Oliviera 9-4 to earn another shot
against Cosanzio in the finals.
The first set of the finals was close all the way, but the match
was decided in the 15th game when Cosanzio scratched while running
out the rack for an 8-7 lead. Instead, it was D'Alfonso who
would take the 8-7 lead and then go ahead to win the match 9-7.
The scratch late in the first match by Cosanzio might have taken
the wind out of his sails as he would also fall in the second
set of the finals 9-2 and D'Alfonso would be the final event
winner
The second chance tournament on Sunday saw eighteen players
compete for $860 in prize money.
The event would be won by Eric Tang, who could not be beaten
all day. Tang beat Bob Vanduzee 3-2 for the hot-seat and then
beat Bill Cote 3-0 in the finals.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour's next stop will be at Snookers in Providence,
RI on June 1st - 2nd. Tour director Mike Zuglan is also still
taking sign-ups for the Turning Stone Classic XXI, which will
take place at Turning Stone Resort & Casino on September
19th - 22nd. Interested players should contact Zuglan at (518)
356-7163.

Jayson
S haw Wins Joss NE 9-Ball Stop |
Jayson Shaw
continued his East Coast dominance with a win at the Joss
NE 9-Ball Tour event at Raxx Pool Room & Grill in West
Hempstead, NY on April 20th - 21st.
While Jayson has been virtually unbeatable recently, his winning
this event would not be a "gimme" by any means,
with a field that also included such notables as Mika Immonen,
Mike Dechaine, Jeremy Sossei and Tom D'Alfonso.
After a lopsided 9-2 win over Mika Immonen, Shaw would ride
the winners side with wins over Brent Boemmels and Michael
Yednak, before a 9-3 win over D'Alfonso for the hot-seat.
Shaw's opponent in the finals, Jeremy Sossei, had dropped
his second match of the event to Pete Ziemak, but that hadn't
stopped him from running through the one loss side scoring
notable wins over Zion Zvi, Mike Dechaine, Nelson Oliveira
and D'Alfonso.
The true double elimination finals would see set 1 go to Sossei
9-5, but Shaw came back to take the second set 9-7 for the
tournament win.
The second chance event on Sunday saw Dave Shlemperis bounce
back from a Brent Boemmels loss and double dip Boemmels in
the finals 3-1 and 3-2 for the tournament win.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be at Fast Eddie's Billiards
Cafe in New Milford, CT on April 27th and 28th for their next
tour stop.
Tour director Mike Zuglan is also still taking sign-ups for
the Turning Stone Classic XXI, which will take place at Turning
Stone Resort & Casino on September 19th - 22nd. Interested
players should contact Zuglan at (518) 356-7163.

Tetreault Undefeated for Joss Tour
Win |
Although Tetreault was undefeated,
he dodged his fair share of bullets in this event. His first
match of the tournament found him trailing Tom Acciavati 7-2
before Tetreault righted his ship and won the match 9-8.
Tetreault dodged another bullet in his final match of the day
on Saturday when he saw his 8-4 lead over Dave Bounds get cut
to a 8-8 scoreline. Again, Tetreault took control of the match
and won the final game to stay undefeated on Saturday.
Sunday play saw Tetreault score a 9-6 win over Jeremy Sossei
and then a 9-7 win over Nelson Oliviera for the hot-seat.
Oliviera would fall to Sossei 9-3 on the left side of the board
and Sossei would face Tetreault in the finals.
The final match would be another close one with the score tied
at 8-8 in the first set of the finals. Tetreault missed a tough
7-ball in the case game, but left Sossei hooked and would get
another trip to the table, where he ran the final three balls
for the 9-8 win.
Tetreault earned $1200 for first place, with Sossei taking home
$900 for second.
The second chance event on Sunday saw 30 players who failed
to make it to day two competed for $1100 in prize money.
This event would be won by Redgie Cutler, who defeated Aaron
Greenwood 3-0 for the hot-seat and then defeated Tim Parisian
3-2 in the first and only set of the finals.
The next stop on the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be Raxx Billiards
in West Hempstead, NY on April 20th - 21st. Tour director Mike
Zuglan is also still taking sign-ups for the Turning Stone Classic
XXI, which will take place at Turning Stone Resort & Casino
on September 19th - 22nd. Interested players should contact

Casanzio
and Martoccia score Joss Tour Wins |
While Joss
NE 9-Ball Tour points leader, Jeremy Sossei, was competing
in the Predator Tour event in Astoria, Ron Casanzio was defending
his position as #2 on the points list.
Casanzio ran through a field of 29 players to compete for
the hot-seat against Jason Michas. That match would be a close
one, with Casanzio winning the match 9-7.
Michas would have his hands full with Bruce Carroll on the
one loss side as the two combatants fought to hill-hill before
Michas won the case game to earn another shot at Casanzio
in the finals.
The first set of the double elimination finals would be another
battle and another 9-7 scoreline, but a different winner as
Michas won the match to force a second set to determine the
tournament winner. As evenly matched as these two players
were, it was another 9-7 scoreline with Casanzio winning the
match and taking first place.
The tournament winner moved Casanzio within just 20 points
of Sossei for the points lead.
The second chance event on Sunday saw Dominick Martoccia go
undefeated through the field for the win. Martoccia defeated
Pierre Sauve 3-1 for the hot-seat and then defeated Doug Wells
3-2 in the finals for the tournament win.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be at Golden Cue Billiards in
Albany, NY on April 13th and 14th for their next event; the
NE 9-Ball Open XXVI.
Tour director Mike Zuglan is taking signups now for the Turning
Stone Classic XXI, which will take place at Turning Stone
Resort & Casino on September 19th - 22nd. Interested players
should contact Zuglan at (518) 356-7163.

Pomainville
Earns First Joss Tour Win |
|
Norm Pomainville made his way through a field
of 41 players at Trick Shot Billiards in Clifton Park, NY to
win his first Joss NE 9-Ball Tour stop; but it wasn't easy by
any means.
Pomainville dropped the hot-seat match in a heartbreaking 9-8
match to Tom Acciavati, but bounced back with a 9-6 win over
Ron Casanzio on the one loss side.
Pomainville squared off against Acciavati in the finals, and
won the first set in another hill-hill match. The first set
appeared to take all of the wind out of Acciavati's sails as
Pomainville dominated a 9-2 match to capture first place.
The second chance event on Sunday draw a field of sixteen players
and Paul Rozonewski went undefeated to win this event.
Rozonewski came out on fire and won his first three matches
3-0. A 3-2 win over Dan Menzies got Rozonewski into the hot-seat
and a 3-1 win over Jeff Smolen in the finals earned Rozonewski
the win.

Dechaine over Sossei for Joss Tour
Win |
Mike Dechaine held off a late
run by Jeremy Sossei to win the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour's 4th Annual
New England Pool & Billiards Hall of Fame Open on March
2nd and 3rd.
The field of sixty seven players would have their work cut out
of them, as Mike Dechaine doesn't lose much on his home turf.
Dechaine found himself facing Jeremy Sossei for the hot-seat,
where he scored a 9-8 win.
On the one loss side, Sossei demolished Joeu Dupuis 9-2, to
earn a shot at redemption against Dechaine in the finals.
The first set of the finals saw Dechaine race out to a 7-2 lead
before Sossei came back to win seven of the next eight games
and steal the match 9-8. There would be late heroics for Sossei
in the second set as Dechaine kept his foot on the gas throughout
the match and won 9-4.
The win catapults Dechaine over Ron Casanzio into second place
on the Joss Tour Points List - and well within striking distance
of points list leader Jeremy Sossei.
The second chance tournament on Sunday saw twenty two players
competing for nearly $1000 in prize money. Paul Dryden was the
man to beat, as he defeated Francisco Cabral 3-1 for the hot-seat
and then defeated Doug Brown 3-0 in the first set of the finals.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be back in action on March 16th
and 17th at Trick Shot Billiards in Clifton Park, NY.
Tour director Mike Zuglan is taking signups now for the Turning
Stone Classic XXI, which will take place at Turning Stone Resort
& Casino on September 19th - 22nd. Interested players should
contact Zuglan at (518) 356-7163.

Sossei
wins nine straight for Joss Tour Win |
|
After a first round loss to Matt Tetreault,
Jeremy Sossei forged a two day come-back through the one loss
side to win the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour's tour stop at Sharpshooters
billiards in Amsterdam, NY on February 23rd and 24th.
The story on the winner's side of the bracket was the play of
Ron Casanzio and Nelson Oliviera. They both made it through
the forty nine player field undefeated and faced off for the
hot-seat. The hot-seat would go to Casanzio by a 9-3 scoreline.
On the one loss side, Sossei was mowing down opponents. With
the exception of Martin Daigle, not one opponent reached the
hill against Sossei. Daigle will only be able to think about
what should have been as he led Sossei 8-4, but was unable to
win the final game before Sossei won the match 9-8.
After the loss to Casanzio for the hot-seat, Nelson Oliviera
dropped a close 9-7 match to Sossei - and the finals between
Sossei and Casanzio were underway.
The first set of the finals went to Sossei 9-2, and the second
set wasn't much better for Casanzio as Sossei scored a 9-4 victory
to complete his 9 match winning streak for first place.
The second chance event went to Brent Boemmels, who defeated
Dan Menzies 3-0 for the hot-seat and again 3-0 in the first
and only set of the finals.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be at Snookers Billiards in Providence,
RI this weekend for the 4th Annual N.E. Hall of Fame 9-Ball

Van Boening comes back from semifinals
loss to take down Archer at Turning Stone XX |
You really couldn't have asked
for more in a 21st century pool tournament than the final group
of 12 players, out of a full field of 128, who competed in Turning
Stone XX, the $25,000-added Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour stop,
hosted by the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY from January
10-13. Among them were arguably the best player in the world
right now (Shane Van Boening), along with three of his four
Mosconi Cup teammates - Mike Dechaine, Johnny Archer and Dennis
Hatch. Van Boening's other Mosconi Cup teammate, Brandon Shuff,
fell early, in a loss-side double hill battle versus Jason Klatt.
Also among the final 12 were Warren Kiamco, Ronnie Alcano, Jayson
Shaw (who's won three events on this season's Predator Tour),
Corey Deuel, Thorsten Hohmann, Shaun Wilkie, and Jonathon Demet,
the 'dark horse' player in the group, who'd been sent to the
loss side from among the winners' side final eight by the 12th
player on the list, Karen Corr.
In the end, it was Van Boening who prevailed, coming back from
a defeat in the hot seat match at the hands of Archer, to take
the Scorpion down in the finals. Both finished the tournament
with 7-1 records. Van Boening won 65% of his games; 75-35, including
two shutouts, one in his opening round against David Mills,
and the other against Kiamco in one of the winners' side semifinals.
Archer won 58% of his games (68-49).
Van Boening opened the proceedings with the shutout over Mills
and then went through Willie Oney, Robb Saez, fellow Mosconi
Cup teammate Mike Dechaine (9-7) and survived a double hill
battle against Jayson Shaw, which moved him (Van Boening) among
the winners' side final four for the match against Kiamco. Archer
opened up with a victory over Bob Cunningham, and then went
through Manny Chau, fellow Mosconi Cup teammate Dennis Hatch
(9-7), Ron Casanzio and Shaun Wilkie, which moved him into the
other winners' side semifinal against Karen Corr.
Van Boening did his shutout number on Kiamco, as Archer was
busy sending Corr west 9-4. Van Boening took an early 3-0 lead
in the hot seat match that followed, but Johnny went on a run
that put him out in front by four when he reached the hill.
Van Boening came back to force a deciding 17th match, but Archer
hung on to sit in the hot seat, having won what proved to be
his last match.
Corr moved west to pick up Thorsten Hohmann, who'd survived
two straight double hill duels versus Deuel, first, and then
Jayson Shaw. Kiamco drew Dechaine, who'd eliminated Shaun Wilkie
9-4 and then, fellow Mosconi Cup teammate, Hatch 9-3. Hohmann
put an end to Corr's bid with a 9-5 win, and in the quarterfinals,
faced Dechaine, who'd defeated Kiamco 9-7. Dechaine proved to
be the third Mosconi Cup team member to go down, falling to
Hohmann in those quarterfinals 9-7.
Van Boening got his second crack at Archer with a 9-6 win over
Hohmann in the semifinals. The final race-to-13 battle stayed
close for a little while, but Van Boening took over once Archer
had chalked up his fifth rack. Van Boening had a three-point
lead at the time, and he kept it going to the eight-point lead
that gave Van Boening the title.

Dechaine
Wins Ocean State 9-Ball Championship |
|
Mike Dechaine has a number of major titles to
his credit, already in his career. But one title that has eluded
him the last two years was the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour's Ocean State
9-Ball Tournament at Snookers Billiards in Providence, RI. In
2010, Dechaine finished in second to Mika Immonen. Dechaine
got closer in 2011, when he beat Tom D'Alfonso on the first
set of the finals, but lost in the second set.
This year, Dechaine left no doubts as he cruised to an undefeated
win over a field of 72 players and will finally be able to see
the banner lifted to the rafters with his name on it.
Dechaine took the hot-seat with a 9-0 win over Jeremy Sossei
that was finished in roughly 30 minutes.
Sossei went to the one loss side and found Brett Stottlemyer
waiting. Stottlemyer had just defeated Ronnie Alcano, but Sossei
made it look easy with a 9-3 win over Stottlemyer.
The true double elimination finals wouldn't even come close
to a second set as Dechaine cruised to a 9-3 win over Sossei
for his first Ocean State title.
Dechaine commented after the tournament, "This event is
one I have wanted to win for year. Now my name can hang along
side some of the best names in pool.". Dechaine went on
to send out his thanks to his sponsors Predator Billiards and
Snookers Billiards.
Although he settled for second place, Sossei's finish was enough
to move him to the top of the points list. Dechaine moved into
second place with Ron Casanzio, Nelson Oliveira and Matt Tetreault
filling out the top five places.
The next event on the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour is the Turning Stone
Classic XX on January 10th - 13th at the Turning Stone Resort
and Casino in Verona, NY.

Strickland Over Dechaine at Raxx
Joss Tour Stop |
Earl Strickland continued his
dominance of pool on the East Coast with an undefeated run through
the field of 31 other players to win the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour's
stop at Raxx Billiards in West Hempstead, NY over the November
10th - 11th weekend.
Strickland was only one of the marquee players in this one,
as Mike Dechaine, Jeremy Sossei, Jayson Shaw and Shaun Wilkie
were also in the field and would not have been considered surprises
to snap this event off.
Wilkie found himself on the left side of the board early Saturday
after a second round loss to Nelson Oliveira. Dechaine was sent
away from the winners side by Sossei 9-8 in the final eight
undefeated players, and Sossei quickly followed 9-7 at the hand
of Jayson Shaw.
After Strickland sent Oliveira to the left side, it was down
to Earl and Jayson for the hot-seat. Jayson has been taking
on just about every world beater on the East Coast lately, but
this match went to Earl 9-5 for the hot-seat.
On the one loss side, Wilkie had a nice run of four match wins
before being eliminated by Dechaine. Sossei's stay on the left
side was a short one as he was quickly eliminated by Mike Badsteubner.
Dechaine's run on the left side was no easy chore as he defeated
Mike Zuglan, Wilkie, Oliveira, Badsteubner (a nice 4th place
finish) and Shaw to earn his place against Strickland in the
finals.
The final match between Strickland and Dechaine would be hard
to pick a favorite for, but Earl took control of the first (and
only) set to win 9-6 for first place.
Strickland's win puts him at number 8 on the Joss Tour points
list. Dechaine's runner-up finish moves him from 5th to 4th
on the list. Ron Casanzio remains on top of the list, with Sossei
one spot behind in second.
The second chance event on Sunday drew eight players and saw
Chris Lazarovitch tested by Brent Boemmels in a two set final.
Lazarovitch took the hot-seat with a 3-2 win over Boemmels,
but Boemmels came back and beat Lazarovitch 3-1 in the first
set of the finals. Lazarovitch bounced back and took the second
set of the finals 3-0 for the tournament win.

for the 24th Ocean State 9-Ball Championship. This will be a
$5000 added event with no second chance tournament.
Players are also reminded that the Turning Stone Classic is
coming up in January and the field is already 75% full. Interested

snares Al Conte Memorial Win |
Jeremy Sossei |
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour celebrated the life
of well known east coast table mechanic Al Conte with their
Al Conte Memorial Tournament at Hippo's House of Billiards on
November 3rd and 4th with a field of 52 players.
While the two day event was all about remembering Conte, the
tournament belonged to Jeremy Sossei who cruised through the
field undefeated for his first Joss Tour win of the new season.
Sossei Tour points leader Ron Cosanzio 9-5 for the hot-seat
and then defeated Adam Keilar 9-3 in the finals after Keilar
dispatched Cosanzio 9-7 in the semi-final match.
Cosanzio's third place finish was enough to keep him in the
tour points list lead after four events.
The second chance tournament on Sunday drew sixteen players
and witnessed another undefeated run as Russ Philp defeated
Spencer Auigbelle for both the hot-seat and again in the finals.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be back in action this weekend
(November 10th - 11th) at Raxx Pool Room in West Hempstead,
NY.
Players are also reminded that the Turning Stone Classic is
coming up in January and the field is already 75% full. Interested
players are urged to contact Mike Zuglan at 518-356-7163 to

Cosanzio
undefeated for Joss Tour Win |
Ron Cosanzio
went undefeated through a field of 31 other players to win
the third stop on the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour's 2012/2013 schedule
at Premium Billiards in Syracuse, Ny.
Cosanzio and Russ Philp faced off for the hot-seat on Sunday,
which was won by Cosanzio with a 9-8 scoreline.
On the one loss side, Philp found Spencer Auigbelle waiting.
Auigbelle had lost his first match of the tournament, but
came back through the left side of the board to earn his place
in the semi-finals. That match would be another hill-hill
battle with the same result for Philp; a hill-hill loss.
The double elimination finals would only go one set, with
Cosanzio scoring a 9-5 win in the match.
The win moves Cosanzio to the top of the Joss Tour's points
list.
The 2nd chance event on Sunday saw Ed Saur go undefeated with
wins over Dave Mills for both the hot-seat and in the finals.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will be at Hippo's House of Billiards
in Utica, NY for their next stop on November 3rd and 4th.
Players are also urged to get their entries in for January's
Turning Stone Classic. Players can contact Mike Zuglan at
518-356-7163.

Mike Dechaine and Gareth Steele |
Dechaine Kicks Off New Joss Tour
Season With Win |
Mike Dechaine bounced back from
a late loss to Gareth Steele, only to avenge that loss in the
finals and win the first stop on the 2012/2013 Joss NE 9-Ball
Tour on September 29th and 30th at TJ's Classic Billiards in
Waterville, Me.
In this field of 41 players, it was Steele who captured the
hot-seat with a 9-5 win over Dechaine. Dechaine didn't stay
on the one loss side for long, as he defeated Jeremy Sossei
9-6 to set up the rematch with Steele in the true double elimination
final match.
The first set was a close one, but Dechaine captured the set
9-7 to force a second set. That second set was all Dechaine
with a lopsided 9-3 scoreline.
Dechaine earned $1050 for the win, while Steele settled for
$800 in second place prize money.
The second chance tournament on Sunday also saw a comeback winner,
as Cleiton Rocha lost to Phil Davis in the final four players
on the winners side, but came back to Rick Matarazzo, Bill Cote,
Davis and Joe Dupuis in the finals.
The win was worth $320 for Rocha, with Dupuis taking home $240
for second.

Tetreault
Forges Comeback Win over Casanzio at Joss Tour Stop |
Ron Casanzio, Tim Berlin and Matt Tetreault |
The old adage goes that the first and the last
games in a race are the hardest to win. That was certainly the
case for Ron Casanzio in the finals of the Joss NE 9-Ball Tour
stop at Sharpshooters Billiards in Amsterdam, Ny.
The event drew a field of 47 players and the winners side came
down to Matt Tetreault and Chance Chin for the hot-seat. That
match would be fairly one sided with Tetreault winning 9-4 to
send Chin to the one loss side.
On the one loss side, Casanzio was on a roll and he kept that
momentum going with a 9-5 win over Chin to send Chin to the
rail in third place.
The first set of the double elimination finals saw Casanzio
score a 9-6 win over Tetreault to force a second set. It wasn't
the first game that Casanzio had problems with in the second
set. The first game came early and Casanzio raced to an 8-2
lead in the race to nine. The last game proved to be elusive
though, as Tetreault won the next seven games for the 9-8 victory
and his first Joss NE 9-Ball Tour victory.
The second chance event drew 22 players back to Sharpshooters
on Sunday and saw Bruce Carroll bounce back from a loss to Jordan
Labbe to double dip Brent Boemmels in the finals. Carroll had
wins over John Babravich, James Chemaly and Labbe on the one
loss side, and then defeated Boemmels 3-0 and 3-2 in the double
elimination finals.
The Joss NE 9-Ball Tour will now take a break until the end
of October with their next event at Premium Billiards in Syracuse
on October 27th and 28th.
Players are also encouraged to get their entries in for the
Turning Stone Classic XX on January 10th - 13th. Players can
contact Mike Zuglan at 518-356-7163 to reserve their post in
the event.
